Her artistic practice has an unfixed quality to it, as many things often do when you’re 24. A woman of many interests, she has been known to depict birds, stray cats, divine light, Catholic iconography, the lore surrounding the Sicilian Mafia, and the detritus of day-to-day life, employing graphite, colored pencil, watercolor, and oil paints and pastels. An emerging curator, her approach to the process is intuitive and kinesthetic. Madeleine graduated from Barnard College magna cum laude in 2023, and studied Art History with a Visual Arts Concentration and Italian. She recently began her MA in Art History at Hunter College, pursuing an Advanced Curatorial certificate. Spanning 150 years of art history, the show features works by Mary Cassatt, Elizabeth Catlett, Joan Snyder, Angela Fraleigh, Julie Heffernan, Elizabeth Turk, and others. This presentation doesn’t attempt to encompass the depth and breadth of art produced by women artists, nor does it seek to. Rather, it strives to challenge ever-present conceptions of gendered labor, acknowledging the social, political, and economic conditions that constrain and oppress women artists while arguing for understanding each woman’s work in her own right. When we hear the phrase “women’s work,” the first thing that comes to mind is domestic labor: cooking, cleaning, childcare—all the duties associated with keeping a home. If we consider “women’s work” in terms of artistic production, we think of textiles: tapestry, quilting, sewing, weaving. Historically, these practices were labeled as craft and not as fine art. Their association with functionality undermined opportunities for aesthetic and technical appreciation. This has changed in recent years as museums mount exhibitions that bring craft into the institutional fold. But even as craft receives its long-overdue celebration, the concept of “women’s work” persists, and with it the idea that some modes of artmaking are more suitable for women than others, specifically, modes which reinforce that a woman’s place is at home. Therefore, equally important to elevating craft is reconsidering the way it has been gendered. It is not that women are naturally predisposed to particular media (or subjects); rather, they historically have been limited to those that don’t interfere with established gender roles. Today Kline is celebrated for the powerful and heroic black-and-white paintings incorporating abstract motifs and physical brushwork that debuted in his first one-person show at Charles Egan Gallery in New York in 1950. Less known, however, is the stylistic experimentation that preceded and presaged the artist’s now-iconic work. This exhibition focuses on the imagery Kline produced in the 1940s, as he developed his most influential relationships with Willem and Elaine de Kooning and other artists associated with the New York School. The artworks all come from the collection of the artist’s dear friend and earliest patron I. David Orr (1904–1997) of Long Island, New York. From their first meeting in 1939, Orr supported Kline as he gained his footing in the New York art world. Orr purchased dozens of Kline’s works as they were completed, and commissioned portraits of himself, his wife Miriam, and daughter Sue.&nbsp; Remarkably, Orr acquired Kline’s work over a sustained twenty-year period and kept his collection intact. He supported his friend’s career by sponsoring solo museum shows at important institutions, which included most of the works in this exhibition. This marks the first time that these works have been offered on the market since they were acquired by Orr eight decades ago. As a group they illustrate not only Kline’s stylistic evolution, but also the parallel evolution of Orr’s own taste as a collector. Chapin, Garrity, Hermann, and Lee previously collaborated as part of Barnard College’s 2023 Visual Arts Thesis cohort, presenting their work together in the 2023 exhibition BECOMING/UNBECOMING. Labels, inscriptions, and dates find themselves grouped in with this term to describe the contents found on the backs of pictures. But what does see verso mean when taken out of this literal context? It is an indication that there is something more; you must look back to produce something new. See Verso: A Guide to Looking Back showcases an eclectic group of modern and contemporary artists who look back to their art predecessors as a means of fully understanding them. Each work in See Verso possesses a unique mythic quality. Greco-Roman classicism, the art historical canon, biblical narratives, and the natural world are adapted onto canvas and paper as allegories, symbols, and as subjects themselves. Through these references, the artists are inviting us to look to history’s so-called “end product” to examine the present, and in turn render it changeable. Perhaps these myths shift or challenge perceptions. Perhaps they heighten them. I’m trying to spend less time worrying; &nbsp; &nbsp; to wake up earlier, &nbsp; &nbsp; drink more water, &nbsp; &nbsp; eat more fruit, &nbsp; &nbsp; journal, &nbsp; &nbsp; read, &nbsp; &nbsp; sleep. Does anyone else feel like they’re reaching for something that’s always just, ever so slightly, too far away to grab? &nbsp; &nbsp; I think back to the moon, &nbsp; &nbsp; as seen outside the backseat window &nbsp; &nbsp; of a Honda Odyssey. My odyssey is such: &nbsp; &nbsp; luteal phase this, &nbsp; &nbsp; b12 that, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; (all these deficiencies!) &nbsp; &nbsp; dirty dishes, &nbsp; &nbsp; mosquito bites, &nbsp; &nbsp; is it 8 o’clock already? &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; (I haven't even had dinner yet.) &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; (I haven't even had breakfast yet.) &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; (Ad infinitum.) &nbsp; &nbsp; a playlist for every feeling I’ve ever felt, &nbsp; &nbsp; a vacuum that doesn’t seem to work, &nbsp; &nbsp; no stars, &nbsp; &nbsp; stray cats, &nbsp; &nbsp; another doctor’s appointment, &nbsp; &nbsp; the dread one feels between 2 and 4pm. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; (do they make a vitamin for this?) I’m afraid this is getting repetitive, or maybe too literal, or, and God forbid, too personal. &nbsp; &nbsp; How to be an artist &nbsp; &nbsp; without telling anyone &nbsp; &nbsp; how you're really feeling? &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; How to write a poem &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; without telling anyone &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; what you’re really thinking? &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; How to believe in God&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; when you’re so sure &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; there’s nothing after this? And with that - To remember: &nbsp; &nbsp; there is no such thing as a special occasion, &nbsp; &nbsp; refill the ice tray, &nbsp; &nbsp; most things are easier than you think they are, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; except for the things that are harder, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; (those are much, much harder) &nbsp; &nbsp; the library closes at 8pm, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; (except for when it closes at 6pm) &nbsp; &nbsp; refill the ice tray, &nbsp; &nbsp; Saint Anthony for lost objects, &nbsp; &nbsp; Saint Michael the Archangel for protection, &nbsp; &nbsp; don’t trust how you feel about your life after 9pm, &nbsp; &nbsp; anything worth doing is worth doing poorly, &nbsp; &nbsp; never sleep with makeup on, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; (nor with a tampon in) &nbsp; &nbsp; refill the ice tray.
